Oman sits in the south-east of the Arabian Peninsula: rugged mountains, wadis with emerald water, old forts and a long coastline. Muscat is a low-rise, spotless capital with a souq, a seafront corniche and a grand mosque, and the desert or the mountains are a few hours' drive away. At the border you'll be asked for a hotel booking, health insurance and a return ticket, so have them ready before you fly.
The best time is October to April. Summers in Muscat are very hot.
